When I think of Tim McGraw, it’s hard for me not to go to the 1990’s version of him with the full face, mullet and that signature mustache singing “Indian Outlaw.” That’s personally my favorite era of Tim McGraw’s music.
But that being said, one of my favorite Tim McGraw songs, and arguably his most underrated, is “Humble and Kind” from his Damn Country Music album. And it just so happens that it came out five years ago today.
What sticks out to me is the writing on this one. Written solely by the phenomenal Lori McKenna, it’s a story filled with life lessons that go beyond your run of the mill tailgates and beer songs. Her words dig deep into who we are as people.
“Don’t take for granted the love this life gives you
When you get where you’re going don’t forget turn back around
And help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind.”
That ending always hits home, and frankly, it’s a message that everyone can (and should) get behind.
“Humble and Kind” went certified platinum and took home the win for Best Country Song at the Grammys, Video of the Year at the CMT Music Awards, the Song of the Year at the CMA’s, and Country Song Of The Year at the AMA’s.
Take a couple of minutes out of your day and give this song and music video a watch. It’ll puts things in perspective real quick.
