California

PALMDALE — A 9-year-old boy was thrown from a car and killed Monday in a single-vehicle crash on the northbound 14 Freeway in Palmdale that also injured a 1-month-old boy, a 1-year-old boy and two adults.

The crash occurred about 10:50 p.m. Monday just north of Avenue N when the motorist veered into the center divider, then tried to re-enter the freeway at approximately 65 mph, said to Sgt. Jarrod Banta with the California Highway Patrol.

The driver lost control, went across all lanes of traffic and hit a dirt embankment, and the vehicle overturned, Banta said.

The 9-year-old boy, of the Kern County community of California City, was thrown from the 2008 Kia Spectra and died at the scene, the CHP reported. His name was withheld, pending notification of his next of kin.

The driver, a 56-year-old Los Angeles man, suffered minor injuries, the CHP reported.

A 28-year-old woman riding in the car suffered moderate injuries. A 1-year-old boy and a 1-month-old boy riding in the car both suffered minor injuries. The woman and the two boys also are from California City, the CHP reported.

Alcohol or drugs were not considered to be factors in the crash, Banta said.

An investigation into the crash prompted the closure of several northbound lanes of the freeway and a freeway on-ramp for nearly six hours. All lanes of the freeway reopened about 4:30 a.m., the CHP said.
