Say what you want about Morgan Wallen (seems to be a bit of a love him or hate him kind of guy lately), he’s not shy about putting his life, however chaotic it may be, into his music.
Take “Livin’ The Dream” for example.
A song about how much his rockstar life is killing him, it was essentially a song about being on a path that he didn’t want to be on.
“Mama don’t pray for my success anymore, yeah but mama still prays for me.”
Seein’ the world ain’t really seein’ the world through windows from A to B
Between alcohol and women, Adderall and adrenaline, I don’t ever get no rest
Signed my life away to be the life of the party.”
Granted, it’s a total pop song, one that sonically I don’t really like at all, but I can appreciate the honesty in the message. And it couldn’t have been more accurate.
After punching a guy out on Aldean’s tour, getting arrested at Kid Rock’s bar in downtown Nashville, fathering a son with his ex-fiancée that was, for the most part, a surprise to the general public, and getting axed from Saturday Night Live after swapping spit with every sorority girl in Tuscaloosa… the writing was already on the wall.
And the February came around, the racial slur incident, the hiatus, and well… you know the rest. But once again, the writing was already on the wall.
However today, Morgan Wallen is back with a brand new one, another one where we see him opening up for a heartfelt letter to his mom:
“I wrote this song for my mom a while ago, seemed like an appropriate time to share it.”
The first verse is reminiscent of the confessional nature of “Livin’ The Dream”:
“Been chasin’ songs and women, makin’ some bad decisions, God knows I’m drinkin’ too much…
And the the chorus:
“I thought you should know that all those prayers you thought you wasted on me
Must’ve finally made their way on through
I thought you should know I got me a new girl down in Jefferson City and,
She lets me fish whenever I want to
I’m still proud of where I came from, still your only damn son
Can you believe I’m on the radio
Just thought you should know.”
Can’t go wrong with a song straight from the heart.
Check it out.
Of course, he was seen recently at Kid Rock’s bar in Nashville earlier this week, singing some his hit songs “Wasted On You” “Sand In My Boots” and “Whiskey Glasses.”
It was his first time performing since the racial slur incident this past February.
