Kacey Musgraves is gearing up to release another album this year, and for her, the entire album can be summed up in one word: Tragedy.
In a new interview with Crack Magazine, Kacey detailed the new project, her mindset going in, a bit about how her psychedelic trips have influenced the genesis of this new album, and more, but for those who were first introduced to Kacey through Golden Hour, she says they’re going to be in for a bit of a surprise.
“They see me as this starry-eyed, rose-colored glasses kinda girl, the ‘Golden Hour’ girl.
Well, here I come with a post-divorce album, bursting the fucking bubble.”
However, for those of us that fell in love with Kacey’s music prior to Golden Hour, the OG fans bumping Same Trailer, Different Park and my personal favorite, Pageant Material, Kacey says this upcoming record might be a little more country than her last:
“I’m a big patchwork quilt. You can cut up in a million different ways and still not be sure of what it is… sometimes I feel like this album has more of a foot in country than Golden Hour.”
And while Golden Hour may have been the album that exploded Kacey’s career into the next stratosphere, she still wrestles with the fact that she’s no longer in that place in her life. However, she knows her fans still want to hear those songs:
“I’ve been grappling with the fact that I’m always going to have to sing ‘Golden Hour’ for the rest of my life.
I could choose to be an asshole to my fans and not sing it, but I don’t wanna do that to people who come dying to hear a song that they love. It’s about finding a balance between giving someone the show that they want and respecting my heart too.”
In the style of a true modern tragedy, the new album will feature 15 songs in three acts (five in each act) so to speak, including one called “Camera Roll” about her flipping through her phone one lonely night after her divorce.
She tells the A Slight Change of Plans podcast how the song still messes with her heart:
“Man, it fucks me up bad. Like it still does. After the divorce and everything, you have all these photos of your life, your old life, in your phone and you don’t know what to do with them. You’re like, ‘Do I delete this? This person didn’t die.’
And these are still my memories, but I don’t want to see him every day… you get to scrolling on your phone, like one late night, and you just wander down this dark alley with all these wonderful memories at one point and then you’re just fucking stabbed in the heart.”
There’s still no word on an album title, a tracklist, or a release date, but it sounds like album is done and ready to go.
Stay tuned…
She also gave fans a little teaser of “Camera Roll” as well as another titled, “If I Was An Angel.”
