Michaels to hire 400 Southern California workers for the holidays

Arts and crafts retailer Michaels is looking to fill 400 seasonal positions in Southern California as the company prepares for the 2021 holiday season.

The local hiring is part of a bigger push to bring on 20,000 seasonal workers throughout the U.S. and Canada to work at its stores and distribution centers.

The company will host a hiring event in U.S. stores from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, and another hiring event will be held in September at the Canadian locations. U.S. applicants can also apply online at michaels.com/jobs.

Openings are available for such positions as sales clerk, assistant store manager, replenishment team member and cashier/stocker. Data from ziprecruiter.com show the average hourly wage for Michaels workers in California is $17.23.

Michaels said its seasonal employees receive competitive wages, flexible hours and a 30% discount on store merchandise. Last year, the company converted more than half of its seasonal in-store positions into regular roles following the holidays.

Many of these team members move up into store management teams, Michaels said.

The Irving, Texas-based company has Southern California stores in Stevenson Ranch, Lancaster, Granada Hills, Encino, Studio City, Burbank, Moorpark, Glendale, Pasadena, Monrovia, West Covina, Whittier, Torrance, Long Beach, Chino, Santa Ana, Fontana and Costa Mesa, among other cities.
