The news of Sturgill Simpson‘s vocal cord hemorrhage has hit the music world pretty hard.
And while the fans are devastated, I’m sure nobody is hurting more than Sturgill himself right now.
We knew something was up when he wasn’t able to perform at his Charlotte, North Carolina concert, and had to cancel the remainder of his shows in 2021.
Although he sent out a message on Instagram apologizing to fans for not being able to perform due to some vocal issues, we didn’t know the severity of the situation.
Ya know, as much as artists travel and sing, it can take a toll on your voice, but normally it’s just a few days or weeks before everything gets back to normal.
However, when Stu revealed he had a vocal hemorrhage, we knew it would be a tough road back.
Fellow singer/songwriter, Ward Davis, sent out a heartfelt message about Simpson, and I’m sure it’s nice for the man to know he’s not alone in this.
Davis sent out this message via Facebook:
“I really feel bad for Sturgill Simpson man. Losing his voice, with such a long road to travel to get it back.
I’ve been playing music since I was 7 years old. Sang on stage the first time when I was 12 (“I Cross My Heart,” at my school talent show), and that’s been such a huge part of my identity and who I am for so so long, I simply don’t know what I would do without it.
I’ve had vocal issues before. Still do from time to time. I will tell you the most terrifying moment of my life was early last year at the voice clinic at Vanderbilt, when the lady stuck the thing in my throat to see what was up.
It was nothing, and I sat there and wept I was so relieved. No injury. Just mental roadblocks. Nothing as permanent, or at least as hurdling as a vocal hemorrhage.
Anyway, this isn’t about me. Just saying I understand that fear, and I can imagine facing that reality would be even more terrifying, and I feel for the guy.
Sturgill kicked a lot of doors down. He made great records and did everything his way. The most fearless, unapologetic, original artist I’ve heard in the last 20 years. It took me about half a second to become a fan and about 30 seconds to become inspired to chase his geese.
I’m thankful and glad I live in the time of Sturgill, and I look forward to the day we can all hear him sing again.”
So to Sturgill Simpson, one of the greatest talents the genre has ever seen, everybody’s rooting for you.
Get well soon.
