What’s closed for Indigenous Peoples Day or Columbus Day, Oct. 11, in the LA area

California
A mural on San Fernando Road in Pacoima depicts Mutimtu Pakovit, Pakoinga Woman, symbolizing a woman from the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians. Pacoima is one of many sites in the San Fernando Valley area of villages of the original inhabitants of the ancestors of the Fernandeno Tataviam people (tataviam-nsn.us). The mural, made by muralist Levi Ponce and his team of street artists and funded through Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez’ office, was unveiled on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019. The city and county of Los Angeles now observe, as of 2017, Indigenous Peoples Day in October instead of Columbus Day. The federal government observes Columbus Day.

Government offices – Los Angeles city and county and national – and superior courts and libraries (Los Angeles Public Library, www.lapl.org/holiday-closures; Los Angeles County Public Library, lacounty.gov/government/about-la-county/county-holidays/) are normally closed for Indigenous Peoples Day or Columbus Day holiday. Los Angeles Unified School District schools are open, however (bit.ly/3F7vJYH).

The state of California does not observe Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day as a state holiday (www.sos.ca.gov/state-holidays).
