‘Yellowstone’ Music Supervisor Reveals How She Introduced Zach Bryan To Dave Cobb To Re-record “Condemned”

If I had to list one reason (even though there are several) why Yellowstone is great, I’d have to go with the incredible music choices.

I mean honestly, their playlist is the best of the best.

From Sturgill Simpson, to Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Whiskey Myers, and Ryan Bingham (who plays Walker in the show), and so many others, it simply doesn’t get any better.

Now, the rockstar music supervisor for Yellowstone, Andrea Von Forester, is going in-depth on the music for the show, after a recent interview with Music Row.

VP of Creative and Apple Music, ViacomCBS Sabrina Del Priore sent a lot of praise towards Andrea, and co-creator Taylor Sheridan:

“Taylor and Andrea do an amazing job ensuring every note of music placed in their show serves a purpose. Along with Brian (Tyler), they have created a distinct sound that not only allows for an immediate connection with fans of the show, but partners like Spotify and Apple Music as well.

Their dedication to authenticity provides tremendous opportunity for artist discovery, which is always important to us at the network.”

Andrea Von Forester has been a music supervisor for 20 plus years, and has worked on films like (500) Days of SummerFantastic Four, Begin Again, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Chasing Mavericks, Devil’s Due, and more. She’s also done music for documentaries like The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights, and Butch Walker.

She’s also done TV shows like Daybreak, Dollhouse, Don’t Trust The B In Apt. 23, Modern Family, Queen Of The South, and many more.

Needless to say, she has quite the resume.

She weighed in on the music choices that go into Yellowstone:

“We tend to use red dirt country a lot, so artists from Texas and Oklahoma, as well as Americana, and country rock.

We don’t get to use a ton of female artists because of the masculine landscape that we have, but when we do, we like to have bold women. So she fits the bill, she’s just amazing.”

She also discussed how she finds the artists:

“Obviously I have artists pitched to me from labels, publishers, managers, and agents. But I also go down massive Twitter and YouTube rabbit holes, that’s how I find artists that aren’t well-known.

Whiskey Myers was a Taylor Sheridan find, I found Zach Bryan.”

One of Zach Bryan’s original hits “Condemned” was featured on the show, and she discussed how she found him:

“I saw him on YouTube and Twitter. I reached out to him on Twitter and said said ‘Hey, I’m the supervisor on Yellowstone. I’d love to use your stuff.’ But his record was very lo-fi– I think it was recorded in an Airbnb so it didn’t quite sound how we needed it for the show.

I asked Zach if I could pair him with colleague of mine, Dave Cobb. His management got him to Nashville, he recorded with Dave Cobb, and we used ‘Condemned’ at the end of one of our episodes.

We have such a solid fanbase that really loves the music. I always want to keep introducing everyone to new artists or local artists they don’t know and love.

We certainly don’t overlook major label artists, we love Chris Stapleton like no other, but it’s nice to give a leg up to the up-and-coming folks.”
