Freezing temperatures in San Fernando, San Gabriel and Santa Clarita valleys

Freeze and frost warnings and advisories are in effect Wednesday morning in the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, the National Weather Service is reporting.

In the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, a freeze warning has been called for the hours of 3 to 9 a.m. Sub-freezing temperatures between 27 and 31 degrees are expected, according to the NWS.

Cities and communities affected by the warning include Santa Clarita, Newhall, Valencia, Woodland Hills, Northridge, Burbank and Universal City.

The low temperatures can cause hypothermia in animals and people. The conditions can also be deadly to crops and other sensitive plants.

Use caution when driving because windshields may be frosted over.

In the San Gabriel Valley, a frost warning has been declared for the hours of 3 to 9 a.m. Wednesday in communities that include Pasadena, San Gabriel and Pomona, according to the NWS.

Temperatures will dip as low as 31 degrees, causing frost to form.

The NWS urged residents to protect animals and plants from the cold weather.
