Children flee Temple City home after their mom dies in apparent murder-suicide

California

In an apparent murder-suicide, a man and woman died of gunshot wounds at a Temple City home Saturday morning, Jan. 1.

The 27-year-old woman was shot multiple times, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred. The man, 28, appeared to have a self-inflicted head wound.

Both died at the residence, located on the 9200 block of Pentland Street.

Responding to a domestic violence call, deputies arrived around 7:15 a.m. Saturday to find three boys, ages 5 to 11, fleeing the home.

“They ran out to the deputies and were whisked to safety,” Alfred said. “They were not injured – physically, at least.”

The woman was the mother of the three children, Alfred said. The man, who had been her boyfriend for about a year, was not related to the boys.

Investigators have not yet released the couple’s names.

Deputies found a legally registered gun at the scene.

“So far, it does not look like the man had a criminal record,” Alfred said.

One of the children made the 911 call. Alfred said he does not know if the call came in before or after the woman was shot.

“It’s a very tragic situation,” he said.
