Jay Barker speaks.
This morning, the shocking news broke that Sara Evans husband, former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, was arrested for allegedly trying to hit her with his car.
He was booked into Davidson County Jail and charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to the arrest affidavit, Evans said she was leaving a party at her neighbor’s house when she got in the passenger seat of a friend’s car to ride across the street. Barker was reported to be “backing up his vehicle at a high rate of speed attempting to hit them but missed.”
Evans, as well as other witnesses, claimed he was intentionally trying to hit them. Barker drove away, Evans called the police, however Barker came back and spoke with officers and was eventually arrested.
The couple was married in 2008, however according to the arrest report, they have separated, Evans has filed for divorce, and they are no longer living together.
The divorce filing cites “irreconcilable differences” as well as “inappropriate marital conduct.”
Jay Barker Releases A Statement
However, Sunday afternoon, Barker released a statement on Instagram, thanking his friends and family for support, as well as asking for privacy.
He also alluded to the fact that there is two sides to every story:
“I am humbled beyond words by the support I have received from friends, supporters, and so many in the Alabama family. To all of you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
We all confront challenges in life, and my family and I are facing one now. Unfortunately, headlines and quick-to-publish news stories do not adequately capture the full context and complex fabric of our lives.
I love my family dearly, and at this difficult time, I respectfully ask for privacy for the sake of my family and especially for our kids.”
Prior to that post, he also shared an Instagram post featuring a number of Bible verses about lying, honesty, and justice.
