If you’ve seen a big blockbuster or even watched a film awards ceremony in the last 25 years, you may well be familiar with Randy Edelman’s compositions without realizing it. Perhaps most famous for the rousing main themes to Dragonheart and The Last of the Mohicans, which have invariably lived on in pop culture, Randy also has a real footing in pop music, as I learned in my interview with him. With collaborations with the likes of The Carpenters, Olivia Newton John, and Barry Manilow under his belt, Mr. Edelman is a pro at a smooth, easy-listening style of pop that was a pillar of 70s and 80s music. He returns to that style with the reserved melancholy of ‘How Could I Let You Go,” a new single featuring singer Chioma and written by Edelman and Kevkeyz.
“How Could I Let You Go” is an emotional belter fit for a 90s R&B diva, where Chioma’s fierce-but-wounded vocals take center stage over a light accompaniment. “Light” is not at all a bad thing in this instance, though—Edelman weaves together a lush blend of piano, snares, and subtle synthesized bleeps that feel, appropriately, like the little doubts continually surfacing in a troubled lover’s mind. Chioma injects a sense of real heartbreak and fatigue into the lyrics of a lost love, and will surely be hitting your heartstrings by the time of the sonorous chorus. “How Could I Let You Go” will be enjoyed by anyone longing for the pop of yesteryear with a real moody edge.
