What’s closed for Juneteenth, Monday, June 20, in the Los Angeles area

Juneteenth is a Black American holiday, celebrated annually on June 19, to remember the day when word came in 1865, finally, to enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, that slavery had ended due to President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.

President Joe Biden signed the newest federal holiday, Juneteenth National Independence Day, into law on June 17, 2021 (bit.ly/3MNcbvx).

Federal government, Los Angeles city and county offices are closed on Monday for the new holiday.

Here is a sampling of other services that are closed or are on a regular schedule on Juneteenth, observed on Monday, June 20.

Banks: Closed, as are New York Stock Exchange markets.

Los Angeles Superior Courts: Open. www.lacourt.org/holiday/ui/index.aspx

Libraries: Los Angeles County libraries are closed on June 19-20 (lacountylibrary.org/celebrate-juneteenth). Call your local branch library or check the website to find out if Los Angeles Public libraries will be closed (www.lapl.org/holiday-closures)

Mail: The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver mail and post offices are closed (about.usps.com/newsroom/events; www.usps.com.

Transit: Buses and subway services in Los Angeles run on a regular schedule (www.metro.net). For example, the G Line (formerly the Orange Line) schedule is here: bit.ly/3JkVMgL (check date for updated schedule). Metrolink trains operate on a regular schedule on the Antelope Valley, Orange County, 91/Perris Valley, San Bernardino, Inland Empire-Orange County and Ventura County Line.
