California

The new Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in downtown Riverside was praised as a game changer for the art world by dignitaries attending a dedication ceremony Thursday, June 16.

They predicted it would make Chicano arts and artists more visible and become a force for inclusion.

Riverside County Supervisor Kevin Jeffries had his own take.

“It’s just cool.”

“The Cheech” will open to the public Saturday, June 18.

What visitors will see is two floors of paintings and sculptures in eye-popping colors and a variety of styles. Some tell more than one story at once, like the lenticular artwork of Torre and Einar de la Torre, which is included in a retrospective exhibition. Similar to 3D postcards, the image in a lenticular can change with just the slight shift of the head.

About 100 works from Marin’s collection are on display on the ground floor, including a 2006 portrait of the comedian by Eloy Torrez.

Opening day is sold out but tickets are available after that.

Tickets for adults are $15.95, and admission is timed. The museum encourages visitors to buy tickets online in advance. Guests can purchase them in person, but if the museum is at capacity, they may have to buy an advance time slot.

The Cheech is at 3581 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside.
