A body found in the slow lane of the southbound 110 freeway near Exposition Park early Monday, July 4, appears to have been struck multiple times by passing vehicles, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The investigation into the death shut down all southbound lanes of the 110 freeway for more than four hours, CHP Officer Peter Nicholson said.
No information was available Monday morning on the victim, how the person ended up on the freeway or how they died, Nicholson said. He said the person had only been reported as being face down in the lane of traffic.
Calls of a possible body in the slow lane at the Exposition Boulevard exit came in at 2:23 a.m. Monday, Nicholson said. Multiple vehicles had reportedly struck the body. Nicholson said no one has been arrested in relation to the incident.
Officers closed all lanes of the southbound freeway at 3:12 a.m., with traffic diverted to the 10 freeway and other off-ramps. The closure remained in effect until 7:18 a.m., with significant backup reported for hours.
There were no previous reports of a potential jumper in the area or other incidents preceding reports of the body being found, Nicholson said.
The investigation was ongoing Monday.
