A 21-year-old man was killed early Monday, July 4, while standing outside his vehicle during a street takeover in the Vermont Knolls area of South Los Angeles.
The shooting occurred about 12:40 a.m. at Century Boulevard and Hoover Street, according to a police services representative at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations Center.
A crowd had reportedly gathered for a street takeover, where vehicles block off a street to show off risky maneuvers such as drifting and donuts while onlookers cheer them on and capture footage for social media.
A 20-year-old man driving in the takeover stopped, got out of his vehicle and shot the man who was standing outside his own vehicle, the LAPD representative said.
The suspect then got back into his vehicle and fled the scene, she said. No description or further details were available Monday morning.
Paramedics rushed the wounded man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the LAPD representative.
Witnesses reported seeing a car with multiple bullet holes and tire tracks on the road at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
The Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol and other Southern California law enforcement divisions have developed special task forces to crack down on street takeovers in recent years, as they’re commonly linked to crashes or to related crimes.
