It still hasn’t hit me that the Turnpike Troubadours are back together.
We’re talking about arguably the greatest country music band to ever walk this planet, behind the songwriting masterminds of frontman Evan Felker.
There was a point in time where I truly believed I would never see the day, and here we are in 2022, where they’re playing a number of shows and headlining a number of festivals.
It feels like it’s 2017 all over again, and it couldn’t feel any greater.
For us diehard Turnpike fans, it’s hard for any of us to find a bad song on any of the four albums they’ve released over the years, from 2010’s Diamonds & Gasoline, to 2017’s A Long Way from Your Heart.
However, what if I told you there’s a song from Evan Felker hidden way deep down in the vaults, that may be one of my top five favorites between both Felker and the band?
The song is titled “Bottoms Up,” and was recorded in 2013 from JJ’s Alley at the Bricktown Pub in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The album, titled Sounds from the Alley, Vol. II, is a compilation of some of the best artists based out of Oklahoma at the time.
With that being said, Felker puts together a masterpiece here, and immediately captivates you from the beginning of the song:
“You’re such a sight in dashboard light
You’re an old forgotten photograph in shades of black and white
And we feel alright well we got all night
Well your daddy’s gone to Kingston bettin’ on a rooster fight…”
“Well bottoms up now darlin’
Well let’s get on back to town
Well the bottoms aren’t the kinda place you need to hang around
Let’s get on back to town
Let’s get on back to town…”
This song is a must hear, as you can literally picture the scenes in your head like a movie as Felker delivers the lyrics.
