The first of the two-day Getty 25’s “Reseda Summer Art Festival” on Saturday, July 9, included art installations, hands-on art workshops, an art market, live musical performances, an immersive digital experience of the Getty Center’s art collections, and roller skating fun at Reseda Recreation Center.
The free weekend event is presented as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Getty Center in Los Angeles. The Getty’s festival program of bringing art to 10 communities in the greater Los Angeles area began in May with festivals in Inglewood and Lincoln Heights/East Los Angeles, continued in June, including a festival in Pacoima. Upcoming festivals in July are in El Monte and Wilmington, and Crenshaw and Watts in August.
Each festival has a community partner and for Reseda the partner is 11:11 Projects.
Thought-provoking art installations this weekend include “Astrofengaiá” by Dina Fisher, “The Word on the Street” by Scott Froschauer, “Am I Weird?” by Simonette Jackson, “*Hugs*” by Robyn Sanford, a “Community Yarn Garden” by Julie Kornblum and “The Oneness Project,” a collaborative community project, by Soori McEachearn.
Festival-goers have a chance to take lessons on costumed figure and portrait drawing, water color painting, spray painting and “tiny-art” making.
The festival continues, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sunday at 18411 Victory Blvd. See the art workshops, entertainment and roller skating (bring your own roller skates) information here: www.1111projects.art/getty25
