Crowds had a hot but cool time at the Malibu Chili Cook-Off event that kicked off last Friday and ran through the Labor Day weekend.
People enjoyed small tastes or bowls of chili, carnival games and rides, music by DJs, food trucks and vendors, and for athletes young and old there was skateboarding and a skateboard contest on Sunday.
The chili competition was open to both amateur and professional chefs. Chili-lovers had a variety of choices from meat-based to vegan, plus Texas-style and those inspired by Asian and Brazilian cuisines. Judges included Helene Henderson, founder of Malibu Farm; Rich Roll, ultra-endurance athlete; Chris Stang, co-founder and CEO of the “Infatuation” restaurant guide/review; chef Sam Talbot, a former “Top Chef” contestant.
A skateboard mini-ramp, presented by one of the event’s sponsors Malibu Village, was available for skateboarders to show-off their style and learn some new tips and tricks from coaches. Skateboarders were also able to vie for prizes during the third Johnny Strange Legacy Skate Competition on Sunday.
The event was a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu. The club has three locations, each having a “Wellness Center,” and programs are for children in TK-5th grade and teens in 6-12 grades. Programs include: the arts, good character, health and wellness, academic success and “empowered voices.” Information on the club: bgcmalibu.org/
