This song truly never gets old.
I could listen to it every single day for the rest of my life, and I still wouldn’t get tired of it
And you may ask how I would even know such a thing, and I would tell you it’s because I pretty much do listen to it every day, and I love it just as much as the first time I heard it. That’s called science, y’all… or something like that.
And over the weekend, the legendary Willie Nelson hosted his annual Farm Aid festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he was joined by his son Lukas Nelson and his band Promise of the Real, as well as his youngest son Micah.
I’m already kicking myself for not going, as it was in my home state this year, especially after seeing some of the videos of the event, which also included performances by John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Chris and Morgane Stapleton, Brittney Spencer and more.
Willie and the boys played a full set, singing together on stage for over an hour and performing tons of Willie’s biggest hits, like “Whiskey River” and “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys,” just to name a couple.
But Willie also requested that his eldest son play his original song “Forget About Georgia,” which is a solo write by Lukas about his heartbreak and how, though he wanted to move on stop thinking about his ex-girlfriend Georgia after they broke up, he’d have to sing Ray Charles’ (and later Willie Nelson’s) hit “Georgia On My Mind” on the road every night with his dad.
It’s not the first time Lukas has played it at a Farm Aid event, and he introduced the song this year telling the crowd a little bit about how it came to be:
“A little while back, I went out with this girl, her name was Georgia. And that proved to be difficult, ‘cuz I’d be out with Dad, we’d be singin’ ‘George On My Mind’ every night.
And so eventually, I had to write this song, ‘Forget About Georgia.’”
The track was included on his 2017 self-titled album Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, and it really is a stunner. Lukas just has a way with words, and I think it’s safe to say he comes by his writing chops and effortless musicianship very honestly.
I mean, good Lord… the apple truly doesn’t fall far from the tree, so to speak, and I could watch this over and over again for hours.
And funny enough, the next track on the setlist was, in fact, “Georgia On My Mind.”
