The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, at Cal State Northridge, held a BikeFest for students and the public on Sunday, Oct. 23, on the campus.
The free inaugural event included bike demos, safety tips for riding bicycles in traffic, various vendors, spin classes and a job fair — plus music and food trucks.
BikeFest kicked off at 9 a.m. with a no-drop 25-mile bike ride off-campus led by Serious Cycling. The day ended with a group ride — Halloween costumes optional — on campus. The interior campus streets were closed to cars for safe bike riding during the festival.
Participants were also invited to listen to cycling professionals and biking industry spokespeople during a “Meet the Pros” panel discussion.
“The Bikefest is really about community,” Yan Searcy, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said in a press release prior to the event. “One aspect is about decreasing the distance between Los Angeles communities and CSUN. Another is about bringing together communities around sustainability, fitness and safety.”
The festival’s focus was also on promoting diversity in the local and wider cycling communities, bringing awareness of job opportunities in cycling — and, of course, fun.
