I think we all know by now that Charles Wesley Godwin is one of the best songwriters in the independent country music scene right now.
Not to mention, the guy can put on an electric show (we here at Whiskey Riff got to all witness it first hand at the Greenville Country Music Fest in Greenville, South Carolina).
Needless to say, he’s one you wanna put on your bucket list, and I’ll leave it at that.
However, perhaps one of Charles Wesley Godwin’s most underrated skills is immaculately covering songs.
We’ve seen him do it a number of times in the past, from Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire,” to Randy Travis’ “Three Wooden Crosses,” John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” Darrell Scott’s “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive,” Zach Bryan’s “Crooked Teeth,” and so many more.
With that being said, the guy is back at it again, and this time he’s covering a song from an artist straight from his home state of West Virginia, Kathy Mattea.
The song is “Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses,” off of her 1988 album Untasted Honey.
The song is all about a trucker who has been on the road for a while, and is trying to get back home to the one he loves.
The chorus speaks for itself:
“Eighteen wheels and a dozen rosesTen more miles on his four day runA few more songs from the all night radioAnd he’ll spend the rest of his lifeWith the one that he loves”
Ol’ CWG does one helluva job by putting a male spin on the song.
