Landmark Theatres Pasadena opens at former Laemmle site

California

Landmark Theatres’ newest location in Pasadena is now open at the former site of the Laemmle Playhouse 7.

Theater officials invited the community to attend a soft opening on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Tickets to view Avatar: The Way of Water and The Fablemans between were being sold on the company’s website.

The Landmark Theatres company announced in May it had signed a long-term lease to operate at the Playhouse 7 in Pasadena with plans to open in the summer.

The Playhouse 7 was built by Laemmle Theatres, opening Feb. 5, 1999. It’s been beloved by Los Angeles cinephiles in the decades since.

Landmark highlighted plans to renovate the seven-screen, 1,300-seat venue located at 673 E. Colorado Boulevard while it was closed.

Planned improvements include upgrades to the sound and projection systems and modernized seats. The venue’s concession stands were also set to be refreshed as the company promising gourmet and healthy food options alongside traditional fare such as popcorn.

Beer and wine will continue to be available. Plans to expand the offering to full spirits were in the works as well, according to the company, which could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.

“The Playhouse acquisition is important for Landmark, as we’re able to continue the tradition of showcasing quality film to Pasadena’s movie-going community,” Landmark Theatres President Kevin Holloway said in a statement in May. “This theater has a deep history, which we look forward to honoring and building upon in the years ahead.”
