Government offices — city, county, federal and state — and superior courts and libraries are normally closed for New Year’s Day, Jan. 1. Since New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday in 2023, government offices and other services are closed on Jan. 2 for the federally-observed holiday.
Here’s a sampling of government offices and other services that are closed or have altered schedules over New Year’s weekend.
Banks: Banks are closed on Jan. 2. Financial markets are closed on Jan. 2 (www.nyse.com/markets/hours-calendars).

Libraries: Los Angeles Public Library locations hours on Dec. 31 (9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.). All libraries are closed on Jan. 1-2 (www.lapl.org/holiday-closures). Los Angeles County Library locations are closed on Jan. 2 (www.facebook.com/LACountyLibrary; lacountylibrary.org).
Mail: Regular mail will not be delivered on Jan. 2 (“Priority Mail Express” will, however, be delivered on Jan. 2 in limited areas). Local post offices may have altered/limited hours on Dec. 31. Metrolink trains run on a Sunday schedule on Jan. 1. Trains run on a Saturday schedule on Jan. 2 (the federally-observed holiday for New Year’s Day). Saturday schedule on Jan. 2 includes service on the Antelope Valley, San Bernardino, Orange County, 91/Perris Valley, Ventura County and Inland Empire-Orange County lines (trains will not operate on the Riverside Line). Trash: Pickup is delayed by one day on Jan. 2 (more information on Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment, 800-773-2489; click on What We Do, then Collection, and then see Holiday Trash Collection here: www.lacitysan.org). Monday’s trash is picked up on Tuesday; Tuesday’s trash is picked up on Wednesday; and so on through the week.
