Wilmington Town Square Park became the setting for a Holy Week ritual on Thursday, April 6, with priests from Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church washing the feet of attendees.
Holy Thursday’s foot-washing ceremony reflects the biblical account of the Last Supper in the Book of John, during which Jesus cleaned his disciples’ feet, telling them to go and do likewise. The ritual, a reminder of serving one’s neighbor, is often carried out inside church buildings, but the gathering in Wilmington took it to a public, open-air space at the corner of “I” Street and Avalon Boulevard.
Revs. Claude Williams, Ruben Rocha and Carlos Mesa from Sts. Peter and Paul led the observance. Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker, who represents the Watts-to-San Pedro district that includes Wilmington, also attended.
