La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities Association and city officials on Thursday, April 27, hosted Spanish artist Javier Montesol for the culmination of their inaugural “Artist-in-Residence” program.
Montesol, best known for his iconic paintings of Spanish dancers and depictions of Spanish culture, collaborated with 14 La Cañada High School art students to create a mural on a building in the campus courtyard.
And a collaboration it was. The students painted, and the renowned artist made suggestions and guide them. The art of stepping back for perspective was in full practice.
The work — billed as “performance art” — was in the spirit of an event commissioned by the National Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona in 2019.
Montesol’s work is included in numerous international collections, including Madrid’s Prado Museum, Museo Reina Sofia, and in private collections around the world.
In Fall 2022, La Cañada Flintridge Sister Cities hosted Montesol and introduced him to the people and culture of Southern California.
He is in Southern California in April and May to complete two projects.
Montesol’s first-ever California exhibit, “Miradas – Crossing Glances,” will debut at the Boddy House in Descanso Gardens on May 2, and May 3.
And on Thursday, May 4, more than 60 pieces of original Montesol art will be offered for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to LCF Sister Cities.
The event begins at 5:30 pm with a VIP reception; general admission begins at 6:30 pm. The festive night will include live flamenco dancers, Spanish music, Spanish wine, and light fare.
