Taylor Swift dropped the much anticipated re-release of her 2010 album Speak Now yesterday, the third of her previous albums that Taylor’s re-released as a result of a disagreement with her former label.
If you’re not familiar with the saga, in June of 2019 Scooter Braun (you may know him as Justin Bieber’s manager) bought Big Machine Label Group and acquired all of the assets. This included every part of every song from Taylor’s time signed to the label, which he then sold to an investor.
So, long story short, she couldn’t get any of her music back and she was pissed about it.
That’s when she decided to re-record her previous albums, releasing the new “Taylor’s versions.”
And the latest in the series is Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), a re-recording of her third studio album which featured hits like “Mine,” “Mean,” “Back to December,” and “Sparks Fly.”
Fans have been waiting a while for the album to drop, and she finally announced that it was coming during her Nashville show back in May.
The album was just released yesterday, but of course, it’s already breaking records.
In just one day, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) has become the most-streamed country album in a single day in Spotify’s history, along with the most streamed album of any genre on a single day so far in 2023.
Now, I know what you’re probably going to say: “Taylor Swift’s not country.” But this album was originally released back in her “country” days, and “Mean” even won two Grammy Awards, for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. The album was also the top country album on Billboard’s country albums chart in 2011.
Two of the songs, “Sparks Fly” and “Ours,” also went to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart during the album’s original release.
Taylor now has 5 of the top 20 most-streamed albums on Spotify in a single day, with Midnights holding down the #1 spot and Speak Now coming in at #5 with a reported 126 million streams on the day it was released.
Pretty insane.
