El Grito – A Commemoration of Mexican Independence: The event is hosted by Los Angeles City Councilmember Monica Rodriguz (CD-7; monicarodriguez.org) and kicks off with a ceremony of the 1810 “Cry of Dolores” — El Grito — a speech made by Miguel Hidalgo, and ringing of church bells in the city of Dolores, Mexico (then known as New Spain), that called for independence from Spain. Hidalgo is known as Mexico’s “Father of the Nation.” Following the ceremony on the steps at Los Angeles City Hall (200 N.
