The rapper was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest

Tekashi 6ix9ine was arrested in the Dominican Republic on suspicion of assaulting two music producers over the weekend.

The Dominican Republic National Police confirmed Tekashi 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, was taken into custody at Hotel Balcones del Atlántico on Sunday in the city of Sanchez. Authorities identified the alleged victims as Cristian Anthony Rojas and Nelson Alfonso Hilario García.

TMZ reported that Hernandez was allegedly jealous of the producers spending time with his girlfriend and fellow artist, Yailin La Más Viral, and that when the rapper showed up to the studio, he allegedly attacked the producers. According to Santo Domingo-based publication Diario Libre, Yailin was at the studio recording a song with producer Diamond La Mafia, and she left before the rapper arrived with four other men.

One of the producers who was attacked told the local publication that suffered an injured jaw and would require surgery.

Dominican Today reported that authorities had obtained a warrant to arrest Hernandez by Friday and that he agreed to surrender to police over the phone. Reports that the New York artist had attempted to leave the country on a private jet in order to evade police have not been confirmed.

In March, Hernandez was hospitalized after being assaulted at an LA Fitness gym in South Florida. Hernandez’s lawyer told NBC News at the time that the rapper had suffered facial cuts and bruising.

Hernandez pleaded guilty in 2019 to armed robbery and other federal racketeering charges as part of a prosecution deal that also saw him testifying against the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. The rapper’s rise and fall was chronicled in a Rolling Stone feature that year.
