Día de los Muertos at Gloria Molina Grand Park: The opening day of the 12th event at Grand Park includes 19 ofrendas (altars) created by individual artists, organizations and community partners and a program of dance and music by Grupo Folklorico Huitzillin, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles and tenor Jonathan Lacayo, from LA Opera, who performs songs that pay respect to Día de los Muertos, plus activities for park-goers, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 21. Also, the community ofrenda honors the victims of gun violence in Monterey Park and those who died as a result of the wildfires on Maui. Park-goers may also contribute to the community ofrenda. Casa de Lopez Adobe tours: The historic 1882 home to Catalina and Geronimo Lopez has docent-guided tours, 6-9 p.m. Oct. 21. Docents discuss the Lopez family and their role in San Fernando Valley history. The adobe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Free admission. Hollywood Forever’s Día y Noche de los Muertos: Tickets are on-sale now for the two separate time slots for the “Day of the Dead” observance with the 2023 theme  “Máscaras de México — Vida y Muerte en La Máscara” (“Masks of Mexico — Life and Death in the Mask”), 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 28 (there is a children’s plaza at the daytime event; ceremonial procession, 11 a.m.), and from 5 p.m.-midnight Oct. 28 (the nighttime ceremonial procession, 6 p.m.). Boney Island at Natural History Museum: The museum presents its Halloween-theme, interactive light-up experience with live animal presentations, artistic performances and surprises.
