Elle King Says She Got Death Threats After Drunken Dolly Parton Tribute Performance

Music

We’re a few months removed from Elle King’s drunken performance at the Grand Ole Opry, which resulted a fury of backlash since the performance was part of a Grand Ole Opry Tribute to Dolly Parton.

The drunken outburst also came right after the singer appeared on Nashville’s New Year’s Eve Bash and seemed to have started the party a little too early, as well.

Ahead of the performance at the second show of the evening, King unleashed a profanity-laced rant while professing that she was heavily intoxicated:

“Hi, my name is Elle King, I’m [effing] hammered.”

It didn’t get any better once she began her performance of “Marry Me” from Dolly’s 2001 album Little Sparrow, slurring her way through the song while screaming “I don’t give a ***!” in the middle of the performance.

Not good…

Immediately after the performance, fans took to social media to express their disappointment at the disrespect shown to the Opry and the Ryman Auditorium, as well as to Dolly Parton.

The Opry even responded to a fan on Twitter (AKA X), apologizing for the language used by Elle King during the performance.

She canceled a number of shows following the back to back drunken incidents, and has just returned to performing recently.

Dolly responded to the scene with grace, calling for forgiveness for Elle, but according to Elle herself, who is now addressing it for the first time, others were far less kind:

“To everyone sending me love because I’m human and already talked to Dolly, I love you. To everyone who told me to kill myself, I love you too.”

The video included the caption:

“Oh no, was my human showing.”

Not exactly apologetic…
