LA Times: In Conversation with Dr. Elijah Nicholas

Books, Interviews, US News

Los Angeles Times sat down with Dr. Elijah Nicholas, Author of Madoodle, Actor/Producer and Transgender Advocate &Thought Leader to discuss his book series called Madoodle and is currently producing and directing a documentary on one of the lost instrumental Trans advocates in history.

LAT: Can you share with us your background and your career?

EN: I have dedicated my life to advocacy, education, and creating inclusive spaces for transgender and non-binary individuals. After a distinguished career as a senior military officer, I transitioned to become a spiritual leader and advocate for health equity and justice. My educational journey includes studying at Harvard Divinity School, and I am an ordained pastor. I am also the owner of DEN Consulting, where we provide conscious leadership training with a focus on inclusion, awareness, and integration. My work extends into the entertainment industry, where I have appeared in TV shows like “Fatal Attraction” and “For My Man,” and I am currently producing and directing a documentary on one of the lost instrumental trans advocates in history. Additionally, I have published 13 times, with my latest venture being a children’s book designed to enhance acceptance and understanding from a young age.

LAT: Can you tell us about your new book and what inspired you to write it?

EN: My new children’s book series, titled “Madoodle,” is inspired by my own journey and the need to create more inclusive narratives for young readers. The book tells the story of an African American ten-year-old girl who is navigating the gender transition of her Uncle Pete, who was once her favorite Auntie Mary. Madoodle aims to provide children with the language and understanding to embrace diversity and see the beauty in differences. Through engaging illustrations and heartfelt storytelling with parents, teachers, friends, and siblings, I hope to inspire both children and their families to create an intentional environment of love, acceptance, and compassion.

LAT: If you could go back and talk to your younger self, what would you tell them and why?

EN: I would tell my younger self that they are capable of achieving greatness despite the obstacles they will face. Embrace your true identity without fear and know that the challenges you encounter will shape you into a strong and resilient individual. These experiences will not only help you grow but will also empower you to become a beacon of hope and a leader for others. Trust the journey, as it will lead you to a fulfilling and impactful life.

LAT: Are you working on any exciting new projects now?

EN: Absolutely. I am currently working on several exciting projects. One is a short film about a successful American trans man businessman who reveals his pregnancy to his unsuspecting family, challenging societal norms and expectations. I am also co-facilitating a panel discussion at the USCHA conference and moderating Pride Community Conversations during LGBT Pride Month. Additionally, I am preparing for the launch of a video shoot focused on Veterans Mental Health. We are also preparing for our first fundraiser, the High Tea – High Tie brunch which will help reduce stigma by educating the community on the trans experience.

LAT: June is Pride Month. What are your thoughts on the political landscape during this election year as it relates to LGBTQIA+ Pride?

EN: Pride Month is a vital time for the LGBTQIA+ community to celebrate our achievements and visibility, but this year, it feels especially poignant given the political climate. As we approach the election, it’s crucial to recognize the heightened stakes for LGBTQIA+ rights and protections. Many legislative efforts are aimed at rolling back the progress we’ve made, particularly affecting transgender and non-binary individuals. It’s essential for our community and allies to stay informed, engage in advocacy, and vote for candidates who support equality and justice. Pride is not just a celebration; it’s a call to action to ensure that our rights are upheld and that we continue to push for a more inclusive and equitable society.

LAT: Where do you see yourself and your career going in this new year ahead?

EN: Looking ahead, I am excited about expanding my impact on a larger scale. I aim to amplify my advocacy efforts through broader media exposure and by securing more speaking engagements. I plan to grow DEN Consulting, offering more comprehensive training programs for organizations committed to inclusion and equity. Additionally, I am working on new film and documentary projects that highlight the experiences of transgender and non-binary individuals. I am committed to continuing my work with The Global Trans Equity Project (GTEP) – (formerly 100 Black Trans amen, Inc.) and seeking new opportunities to collaborate with like-minded organizations to drive systemic change.

LAT: How can our readers connect with you on social media?

EN: Readers can connect with me through my website, www.ElijahNicholas.com, and on social media platforms. Follow me on Instagram @drelijahnicholas, on LinkedIn at Dr. Elijah Nicholas, and on Facebook at Elijah Nicholas. Stay tuned for updates on my latest projects, book releases, and speaking engagements.

By sharing my journey and the work I am passionate about, I hope to inspire others to embrace their true selves and work towards a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
