L.A. City Attorney’s Office won’t pursue the matter after the rapper completed “a community service requirement that was imposed”
Killer Mike will not face charges stemming from his arrest during the Grammy Awards ceremony in February.
The L.A. City Attorney’s Office has opted not to file criminal charges against the rapper born Michael Render, it was revealed Wednesday. “Mr. Render has successfully completed the Office’s Hearing process, including a community service requirement that was imposed,” a spokesperson for the L.A. City Attorney’s Office said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Killer Mike was initially handcuffed and detained after an alleged “physical altercation” at Los Angeles’ Crypto .com Arena shortly after he won Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance during the pre-awards ceremony.
During the alleged Feb. 4 incident, Render encountered a female security guard near her assigned entrance. The guard told police she asked for Render’s tickets and directed him to a security checkpoint. At this point, she claims Render tried to make his way around her, and when she “ran around and got in front of him again,” he allegedly “pushed her to the ground,” sources told Rolling Stone at the time.
Killer Mike was arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge, booked, processed, and then quickly released on his own recognizance. “As you can imagine, there was a lot going and there was some confusion around which door my team and I should enter,” Render said in a statement at the time. “We experienced an over-zealous security guard, but my team and I have the upmost confidence that I will ultimately be cleared of all wrongdoing.”
The Run the Jewels rapper briefly touched on his arrest a week later during an interview on the Daily Show. “I won’t talk about my thing, but I was sitting in a jail cell and I didn’t have anything to do so I just prayed,” he said, referencing his arrest. “And I thanked God for three hours. I’d say, you know, just ‘Thank you for the blessings I’ve had been bestowed upon me. Thank you for the life you’ve given me.’ I invoked the spirit of my mother and my grandmother… After I got out the next morning, I got a call that my son got a kidney [after years of waiting for surgery]. So I’m very much more a believer.”
