Lukas Nelson and Cody Jinks make a helluva pair.
They’ve been on a run of shows together in Arkansas and Texas, and at their show in Dallas over the weekend, Cody joined Lukas and his band, Promise of the Real, to cover Lefty Frizzell’s honky tonk heater “If You’ve Got the Money (I’ve Got the Time).”
Lukas introduced Cody by saying how much fun they’ve had so far, and that he’s one of the best guys he’s ever met:
“We’ve had the honor of being out here with Cody Jinks, and he’s just one of the greatest guys I know. Really happy, I mean, you can see how he treats his family, treats everybody around him, very graciously.
And he also graciously agreed to come play a song with us. Come on out here, Cody, let’s do a Lefty Frizzell song.”
“If You’ve Got the Money” was co-written by Lefty and Jim Beck, and was the second song Lefty recorded during his first session with Columbia Records in July of 1950. It was eventually included on his 1952 studio album, Listen to Lefty, and peaked at #1 on the country charts.
In 1976, Lukas’ dad, the great Willie Nelson, took his version to the #1 spot on the country charts, which was also his second solo release to reach the top spot.
Lukas and Cody actually met about 12 years ago in Fort Worth (which is a pretty funny story), and I hope Lukas opens many more of Cody’s shows down the road, because I need to see them live together.
Lukas shared the whole video on Instagram, and it’s easily the best cover I’ve seen in a long time from two of the most underrated artists in the genre right now… seriously, you don’t get this much talent on one stage very often:
“Can’t go wrong with a little Lefty Frizzell! What a great run with Cody Jinks. We’ve had such a great time with y’all. Dallas – you were incredible, as always.”
