Ashley McBryde Delivers Stunning Cover Of Megan Moroney’s “Mama I Lied” Ahead Of CMA Awards

Music

This is one of the best series on the internet.

With the CMA Awards around the corner, taking place next month on November 20th, Ashley McBryde is tipping her hat to her fellow Female Vocalist of the Year nominees by covering their songs.

Talk about a class act, first of all. McBryde has always been one of the most humble and talented in the business. By doing this “pajama jams” series, where she honors the women she stands alongside in this category, she is building up other female artists and showcasing their incredible talents.

So far in the series, she has covered three of the fantastic women up to take home the award, Kacey Musgraves, Lainey Wilson, and Megan Moroney, and while they’re all fantastic, we need to talk about her Megan Moroney cover for a minute.

My jaw had to be picked up off the floor.

“It’s time to celebrate the five women in the Female Vocalist category, so let’s start with Megan Moroney.”

McBryde says to those on the other side of the screen. She picks up her guitar in a lazy day outfit with no makeup and begins strumming. She wastes little time getting into the lyrics and hearing McBryde sing them gives the song a whole new perspective.

On Moroney’s studio cut, you hear the hurt of a young girl telling her mother about the things she’s kept to herself over the years, including a boyfriend who was no good. While Moroney made him out to be a good guy at the time, he was far from that. Since McBryde is a few years older than Moroney, when she sings the song, it feels as though she’s conversing with her mother (or talking to her late mother), telling her about a divorce or a relationship that left her with scars.

I’m not sure if it’s the wisdom that comes with McBryde’s voice, but the past relationship she sings about feels much more severe than the relationship Moroney references.

“Mama, I lied
He ain’t a good guy
He makes me cry sometimes out of the blue
I’m not sure why it took all this time
I was afraid of what you’d say to do
Guess I wasn’t ready yet to hear the hard truth
So mama, I lied…”

As a viewer, you are captivated and want more as soon as the snippet of the song is over, wishing she’d cover the entire thing.

Megan Moroney was also taken aback by the stunning cover, commenting on her post:

“YESSSS! Love this so much. So good.”

This is a collab that I’d like to see something from in the future. I feel like they would create magic in the studio. But until then, you can find me listening to this snippet of a cover on repeat.
