Brooks & Dunn Update Lyrics To “Play Something Country” To Remove Diddy Reference: “DJ Played Something Sh*tty”

Music

Eh, same thing.

It’s not surprising that everybody’s trying to distance themselves from Diddy these days. The disgraced rapper and producer (formerly known as Puff Daddy, and P. Diddy, whose real name is Sean Combs) was arrested back in September on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. And the allegations paint a disturbing picture of Diddy as a sexual predator who hosted lavish parties attended by a who’s who of celebrities that turned into “freak offs” where prostitutes and young victims would be sexually assaulted.

In one of the more bizarre revelations, it was alleged that officials found 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lube in his apartment, leading his lawyer to issue the hilariously absurd defense that Diddy simply…likes to buy in bulk from Costco.

Even Costco didn’t want anything to do with Diddy though, and quickly came out and refuted his lawyer’s claims by clarifying that the warehouse store doesn’t even sell baby oil…much less cases of 1,000 bottles of the stuff.

Yeah, he’s going to prison. His lawyer clearly doesn’t have anything to save him.

Of course all of this has led many to question who else was involved and just how many (alleged) victims Diddy has assaulted or trafficked. His name is basically up there with Jeffrey Epstein now when it comes to sexual predators, and the “Diddy list” has been a hot topic as the public questions which celebrities took part in his despicable crimes.

So it’s no wonder Brooks & Dunn don’t want to mention him in their song anymore.

Everybody knows the classic hit “Play Something Country” from Kix and Ronnie’s 2005 album Hillbilly Deluxe. The song became Brooks & Dunn’s twentieth and final #1 hit to date when it reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and the duo recently released a new version of the song with Lainey Wilson for their Reboot II album.

And another fun fact: The song was actually written with fellow country singer Gretchen Wilson in mind, with the “Redneck Woman” and their tourmate at the time serving as the inspiration for the main character who “blew through the door like TNT.”

But there’s one line in the song that hasn’t necessarily aged very well:

“The band took a break, the DJ played P. Diddy”

Yeah, ain’t no DJs playing P. Diddy out there these days.

Well Brooks & Dunn came up with a solid fix for the line during a recent live show in Arizona. And they didn’t change the meaning of the line at all:

“The band took a break, DJ played something shitty”

@jamiethisyoujeffries Just when I thought I couldn’t love #brooksanddunn any more…they go and give a big ole F U to the Diddler. 😍 #playsomethingcountry #America #Diddy #diddlersdailynews #countrymusicfans @Jordan Cook ♬ original sound – Jamie Jeffries

Yeah that’s pretty much the same thing.

The band kept the original line the same in the new version of the song that they released with Lainey, but I’m guessing that one was recorded long before Diddy’s recent legal troubles started.

Either way, probably a smart move. Nobody wants to be associated with Diddy these days, and the new line even has a double meaning given what we now know about Diddy as a person. Doesn’t get much more shitty than what he did.
