Dennis Rodman took to Instagram to apologize to his daughter Trinity Rodman, the Washington Spirit’s star forward. The apology comes a day after Trinity gave a rare interview to Call Her Daddy and revealed how absent the NBA Hall of Famer was as a father.
Rodman posted a video of photos he has with Trinity from over the years and used Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses” to soundtrack it. Below the video, he shared a long caption which he started, “Sorry I wasn’t the Dad you wanted me to be.”
Rodman goes on to insist he “still tried” and “never will stop.” He also insinuates that someone else is telling Trinity not to take his phone calls. Regardless, Rodman continues, “I’m always here And tell you all the time rather it’s your voice or voicemail how proud I am. I always had one wish and it was I wish my kids would call me and come see me.”
The post seemed to address specific comments Trinity made about her strained relationship with her father. The soccer player explained that she often doesn’t hear from her father. Specifically, she addressed the viral moment in 2021 when Rodman showed up to her playoffs quarterfinal match against the North Carolina Courage unannounced and how he followed the appearance with “radio silence.”
Even so, Trinity told Alex Cooper that she still answers her father’s sporadic phone calls for her “conscience” and, “if he needed to hear my voice before anything happens. That’s why I answer the phone, not for me.”
In his Instagram post, Dennis also added, “I watch you play all the time.” He went on to describe an incident where he flew in to watch one of Trinity’s matches and watched from his hotel balcony “just to make everybody happy” after he “was told not to show up bc who [he] was.” He ended the post by writing, “I love all my kids,” referring to his son D.J. and other daughter Alexis, in addition to Trinity.
Rodman was married to Michelle Moyer from 2003 to 2004, and dissolved the marriage in 2012. Moyer is the mother of Trinity and D.J., while Annie Bakes, Rodman’s first wife, is the mother of Alexis.
The Instagram apology echoes Rodman’s 2012 acceptance speech into the NFL Hall of Fame. In the emotional speech, he admitted to his shortcomings as a father. “I have one regret, I wish I was a better father,” he said.
Cooper referenced the moment in her interview with Trinity, who rolled her eyes at Rodman’s sentiment. “He wishes he could fight his demons,” Trinity said. But she’s remained skeptical. “I roll my eyes because it’s like, you hear something so many times, but he does nothing to change it.”
