Making her daddy proud.
It’s no secret that the late, great country music legend Toby Keith, who grew up near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was a longtime Oklahoma fan. His diehard love for all things Sooner was well-document.
When he tragically passed away last year, Oklahoma honored his memory and legacy by having the band play his hits between the 3rd and 4th quarters of football games this season. The Sooners were praised for their other in-game tributes to the Big Dog Daddy, which included leaving Toby’s seat open at their first basketball game after his death, they served up drinks in red Solo cups during their rivalry basketball game with Oklahoma State, and they even awarded Toby an honorary degree at their graduation ceremony in the spring.
And then, more recently at the Lockheed Martin Armed Forced Bowl, at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, Toby Keith’s memory was honored yet again by having his daughter Krystal, a talented singer in her own right, perform the Star Spangled Banner. The game featured the Oklahoma Sooners and the Navy Midshipmen of the United
States Naval Academy, where Navy emerged victorious by a score of 21-20.
But if there were 2 things Toby Keith loved, it was Oklahoma football and the men and women of our United States military. No doubt that he was smiling down from above.
Here’s to the Big Dog Daddy… it’s still hard to believe that he’s gone.
Here’s another video featuring the full view of the field, complete with the American flag that was beautifully stretched across the grass.
What a sight to behold… God bless America and God bless Toby Keith and his family.
Oklahoma Fans Sing “Courtesy Of The Red, White & Blue”
Goosebumps.
There’s just something special about a giant crowd of people singing in unison. Whether it’s a concert in front of a packed house of loyal fans, or stadium of sports fanatics… that unity and sense of common purpose can bring the chills.
And when it’s nearly 1000,000 people, remembering a country music legend like Toby Keith… it’s damn near spiritual.
Last year, the Sooners kicked off their season with a 51-3 whooping of the Temple Owls at home at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, also known as Owen Field. But the highlight of the night for me, was unquestionably the debut of the Toby Keith tribute.
With a crowd of more than 83,000, fans belted out Toby’s 2002 hit, “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue,” and man, what a sight to see. I had straight up goosebumps just watching it on screen. I can’t imagine being present for a display of love and remembrance like that.
Here’s to the Big Dog.
