Singer co-hosted The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday
Bad Bunny is selling the New York City busker fantasy. While appearing on The Tonight Show Monday night, the Puerto Rican reggaeton star and host Jimmy Fallon surprised some subway riders with an impromptu performance — all while in disguise.
Dressed in clothes from the Seventies and exuding some hippie energy, the TV host-musician pair performed a rendition of Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way.” Then, the celebrities stripped their wigs, sunglasses, and fake mustaches to go into “NuevaYol” and “DTMF” from Bad Bunny’s new album Debí Tirar Más Fotos, which Rolling Stone dubbed an “Instant Classic.” (Fallon joined Bad Bunny’s band, playing tambourine.)
“Welcome to New York City I’m Jimmy Fallon,” Fallon yelled. “This is Bad Bunny, he’s got a new record out.”
Bad Bunny has had a fun trip to New York City. He was spotted partying with New York congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nydia Velazquez during a visit to Toñitas, which he name-dropped on “NuevaYol.”
The new performance comes hours after Rolling Stone published an interview with the music star about his newest album, dedicated to the deep roots of Puerto Rican culture.
“It’s funny because it’s an album dedicated completely to Puerto Rico, but it starts in New York,” Bad Bunny recently told Rolling Stone. “That was kind of how the album started: Before, when a Puerto Rican would go to the U.S., they’d be like, ‘Me voy pa’ Nueva York!’ So New York would be like shorthand for ‘I went outside of the island’ back in the day.”
The performance is part of Bad Bunny’s co-hosting gig with Fallon on the late-night show Monday. He also announced a 21-show residency in Puerto Rico to celebrate the album.
