Karen Diamond, 82, was one of dozens of people injured during an attack on a demonstration calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza
An 82-year-old has died from severe injuries she suffered during a firebomb attack in Boulder, Colorado, on a demonstration calling for the release of Israeli hostages still in Gaza.
The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the death of Karen Diamond on Monday, June 30. They also announced, because of Diamond’s death, they would be filing additional charges against the suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, including first-degree murder.
“This horrific attack has now claimed the life of an innocent person who was beloved by her family and friends,” said DA Michael Dougherty. “Our hearts are with the Diamond family during this incredibly difficult time. Our office will fight for justice for the victims, their loved ones, and the community. Part of what makes Colorado special is that people come together in response to a tragedy; I know that the community will continue to unite in supporting the Diamond family and all the victims of this attack.”
Soliman is accused of throwing Molotov cocktails and improvised incendiary weapons into the crowd of demonstrators, and could be heard shouting, “Free Palestine.” Before the attack, he allegedly wore a construction vest and posed as a gardener as a way of getting closer to the demonstration.
The complaint brought by the Boulder DA’s office names 29 victims, 13 of whom suffered physical injuries during the attack. Soliman is facing numerous counts of attempted murder and assault, as well. He has pleaded not guilty.
On top of the state case, Soliman was also indicted on 12 federal hate crime counts. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges as well.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis shared a statement on Diamond’s death as well, writing, “This loss is deeply felt by the Boulder community and our entire state, particularly within our strong Jewish community. My heartfelt condolences go out to her friends and family. Karen was taken from us too soon, and we mourn her loss while remembering her life and the impact she had on those who loved her.”
