Two street vendors who were among those struck by a driver accused of intentionally plowing through a crowd outside an East Hollywood nightclub over the weekend are still recovering from their injuries.
Nicolas Suarez and Maria Medrano suffered broken bones during Saturday morning’s crash. They were selling food outside The Vermont Hollywood when a driver intentionally struck a crowd of pedestrians outside the venue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Sarah Suarez, the vendors’ daughter, said her father broke his leg and her mother fractured several ribs. Additionally, the vending cart they used to make their living was destroyed.
“It’s not just a job for them,” Sarah said. “It’s about community, as well. Of course, they are doing it to provide for us, but it’s a way to stay connected. Seeing everyone come together at such a scary moment shows us just how strong our community is.”
Police arrested 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez in connection with the crash. On Tuesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that the suspect is facing 37 counts of attempted murder and 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Two LAPD sources said Ramirez was kicked out of The Vermont Hollywood for fighting, being disruptive and being intoxicated. Moments later, police said he drove his car into the crowd.
If convicted, Ramirez could face multiple life sentences. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
