Police shot a man after he charged and struck an officer with a metal bar in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Officers responded to a reported robbery near Fourth and Omar streets just before 1:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When in the area, officers say they encountered 48-year-old Bernard Deshawn Douglas with a metal bar and a long tree branch in his hands.

LAPD said the man did not comply with officers’ multiple commands to drop the metal bar. Police say they deployed less-lethal foam rounds before the man allegedly charged and struck an officer with the metal bar, prompting a police shooting.

The man was hit by gunfire and taken into custody, the LAPD said. He and the officer were taken to the hospital, where both are in stable condition.

No one else was hurt, and the LAPD said there is no threat to the community.

The investigation is ongoing.
