Descanso Gardens offers scenic ‘Reflections’ until Jan. 10

There’s still time to experience “Reflections,” a display of art installations on the grounds at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge.

While visiting the gardens is a treat for nature lovers during any season of the year, the unexpected artwork and self-guided activities through Jan. 10 add a bit of fun in wintertime.

One installation that can’t be missed is the “Wishing Tree,” by artist Kaz Yokou Kitajima, on the gardens’ main lawn. The “tree” is actually a piece off an oak tree on the property that naturally fell off in 2020, and with branches attached by the artist. Visitors can write down their wish for the new year on pink tags that are then attached to the branches.

In the Camellia Forest, a “Mirror Tree,” with hanging strands of tiny mirrors reflecting light and the surrounding landscape, waits to be discovered. Deer sculptures by artist David Lovejoy delight those who stroll in the pond area near the Promenade.

The blooming and colorful plants to see in January at Descanso Gardens include toyon berries, camellias and winter annuals. The visitor services line confirms what’s blooming each month.
