“Damn GURRRL.”
Get rid of it.
Back in 2019, the always gracious Carrie Underwood did an interview with The Guardian, but she didn’t hold back when it came to the current state of country radio, and more specifically, the lack of depth in the songwriting.
“There’s a lot of songs that aren’t actually saying too much. Fun songs to listen along to, party vibe…. It makes my skin crawl when I hear somebody say ‘Gurrrl’ in a song, you know?”
“A lot” is putting it nicely Carrie… we’re talking like 90% of them.
Obviously, there is a time and a place for party songs, and even Carrie Underwood would have to agree with that. After all, the biggest radio hit she’s had in the past few years was “Southbound,” a summertime party song. But maybe that’s the problem…
Still, for Carrie, her bread and butter is always going to be songs that gravitate towards the classic country themes of a woman wronged, heartbreak, cheating, drinking, and even a good old fashioned country murder ballad.
“I went through a phase where I killed a lot of people. I have no idea why, but I wanted everything to be cinematic and dramatic.”
You hear that people? Cut the “gurrrls,” the “damn babys,” get rid of that all shit. It’s been about a year and half since Carrie gave this interview and it’s still all over country radio. Be better.
Carrie is also gearing up to release her upcoming gospel album, My Savior, a follow up to her Christmas record, My Gift. And while we’re at it, how about a throwback to Carrie and Randy Travis’ duet of “I Told You So.”
