2 killed, 3 hurt in wrong-way 110 Freeway crash; DUI suspected

California

LOS ANGELES — A man and woman were killed and three other people — including a child — injured in a wrong-way crash early Tuesday morning possibly involving a drunken driver on the northbound 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.

The accident was reported about 2 a.m. near Ninth Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of a Lexus SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the freeway and crashed into a Toyota sedan with two people inside, killing both, according to Sgt. Jeff Lane, who added alcohol was suspected as a factor in the crash and a third vehicle hit the Toyota after the initial crash.

The man driving the SUV was briefly trapped in the vehicle and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. A woman passenger in the SUV and a child in the backseat sustained minor injuries, Lane said.

The names of the victims were not disclosed.

The No. 3, 4 and 5 lanes of the northbound 110 Freeway at Ninth Street and the transition road from both directions of the 10 Freeway to the 110 Freeway were closed until further notice.
