How in the HELL on this green Earth did George Strait’s song “How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls” not go #1?
I mean, that’s just blasphemy. How dare The King be so disrespected.
The track was included on his 2007 album It Just Comes Natural and written by Casey Beathard and Ed Hill. It was released as the fourth single from that record, but only peaked at #3 on the Billboard US Hot Country Songs chart.
Now, could part of the reason I love this song be that I truly believe George could do no wrong, and if he put out three minutes of him just singing the phonebook, I’d still love it? Yes. But, it’s so catchy that sometimes I’ll have it stuck in my head for days when I haven’t even listened to the song.
And sure, they’re not the most complex lyrics in the world, but they are fun and easy to sing along to. I also love that it’s seemingly a play on the phrase “How bout them cowboys,” referring to the Dallas Cowboys of George’s home state.
And, have you ever seen this live performance of him singing the song at Gruene Hall in 2016? I mean shit, how does the man just get better and better with age?
