About 1,500 Los Angeles Unified students are expected to participate in free sports clinics this summer through an initiative aimed at helping children find joy and excitement via sports as they recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

The clinics are the result of a partnership between the school district and the L.A. Education Recovery Fund — a philanthropic effort that funds programs which benefit low-income students who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic — along with the LA Sports Council and professional sports teams from the area.

On Wednesday, July 21, representatives from participating organizations announced the launch of the initiative while visiting a clinic at the Robert F. Kennedy UCLA Community School in L.A.’s Koreatown.

Students enrolled in a clinic will be paid a visit from a representative for a local sports organization and/or receive sports camp supplies. Participating sports organizations include the Los Angeles Football Club, the Dodgers, Rams, Chargers, Galaxy, Kings, Sparks and Ready, Set, Gold!, which pairs Olympians and Paralympians with schools in Southern California.

The two-hour sports clinics, which will be based at school sites, will run through July 30. Students in transitional kindergarten through the eighth grade must be enrolled in LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell summer enrichment program to participate. For information or to register, visit https://achieve.lausd.net/summer2021 or contact the student’s school.
