We have our champion.
We started out with all 60 of George Strait‘s number one hits, plus four of his biggest songs that didn’t hit number one.
Then we left it up to you the readers, and for the past week you’ve been voting on your favorites as we narrow it down to one champion.
So before we get to the winner, let’s look back at how we got here.
“Amarillo By Morning” absolutely dominated its side of the bracket – and not because it didn’t face some stiff competition. Knocking off monster hits like “Fool Hearted Memory,” “You Look So Good In Love,” Ocean Front Property” and “Love Without End, Amen” is no easy task, but “Amarillo By Morning” never got less than 79% of the vote to sail into the championship.
And on the other side of the bracket we had a dark horse, “Troubadour,” which surprisingly took down heavy hitters like “I Can Still Make Cheyenne,” “Run,” and “Give It All We Got Tonight” to earn its place in the finals.
I saw a lot of comments saying that “Troubadour” didn’t belong in the finals, but hey, that’s how the votes went. A real Cinderella story here.
So we ended up with a championship matchup between two songs that weren’t even number ones. Would “Amarillo By Morning” continue its dominating run, or would “Troubadour” shock the world?
Well after thousands of votes, the winner is…
“Amarillo By Morning”
In what shouldn’t be a surprise, “Amarillo By Morning” had another strong performance in the finals – though it was the closest matchup that it faced all season.
“Troubadour” put up a strong showing, getting 38% of the vote when no other song going up against “Amarillo By Morning” managed to score more than 21%.
But in the end, it just wasn’t enough.
So there you have it, folks. It’s been a lot of fun going back through King George’s catalog, a good reminder of why he’s one of the biggest superstars that country music has ever seen.
Thanks to everybody who voted, commented, shared, bashed us because they didn’t like how the votes turned out…we love seeing people getting excited and talking about good country music.
Stay tuned for the next tournament – but in the meantime, here’s your winner this time around.
And our 80’s Country Gold playlist has a ton of George Strait hits on there – along with plenty of other classic country gold.
