Marvel Boss Confirms Charlie Cox as Daredevil in the MCU

This article contains some speculation, and therefore potential spoilers for Hawkeye, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Echo and the wider MCU.

In what will come as no surprise to Marvel fans who have been keeping up with various behind the scenes rumors and tantalizing MCU leaks, Kevin Feige has confirmed that Charlie Cox will stay on in the role of Daredevil.

As always, the Marvel Studios maestro chose his words carefully when tackling the subject, but did finally say that the fan favorite actor, who led all three seasons of the popular Daredevil Netflix series, would be the one to play The Man Without Fear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil,” Feige told CinemaBlend. “Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.”

Where, how, and when? Well, it’s possible that Cox could appear as Matt Murdock in a number of forthcoming MCU projects, and two of those appearances may happen in the next three weeks.

Episode three of Hawkeye on Disney+, “Echoes”, just introduced Maya Lopez aka Echo into the MCU, a character known for her links to Matt Murdock in the pages of Marvel Comics, and it’s been confirmed that Alaqua Cox will play Lopez in an Echo spinoff series that could easily feature Daredevil.

The same episode also teased the return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. When Kingpin pops up, of course, Daredevil is rarely far behind. There are also those persistent rumors about Cox reprising the iconic role in this month’s highly anticipated MCU threequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Cox has been fielding questions about his Daredevil return ever since the Netflix show was unexpectedly cancelled back in 2018, devastating fans of the street level Marvel series. In mid-2019, he admitted the cancellation had come as a “real shock”, and revealed that he’d turned down other jobs to star in a fourth season of the show.

Should Marvel deliver an early Christmas present to fans of the series, it’s unlikely that the Matt Murdock of the MCU will be completely in step with the Netflix version of the character. In October of this year, Cox teased that revisiting Daredevil in any upcoming projects may mean implementing some key changes.

“If there was an opportunity for me to come back as Daredevil, whatever that would look like, I imagine it would be a reimagining of the character and the show,” posited the actor. “If they choose me to do it, there are going to be some elements that are of course the same.”

We’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for what the MCU has in store for us this month.

Hawkeye is now streaming on Disney+. Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released on December 17. Echo is currently without a premiere date.
