Babies carried away in bath by Kentucky tornado – but survive

US News

A tornado carried away two babies in a bath but they survived relatively unscathed, their grandmother says.

Clara Lutz put 15-month-old Kaden and three-month-old Dallas in a bathtub to protect them as deadly tornadoes wreaked havoc in the US last week.

She told a local TV station she left them with a blanket, a pillow and a Bible before the house in Hopkins County in Kentucky started to shake.

“Next thing I knew, the tub had lifted and it was out of my hands,” she said. “I couldn’t hold on…”

Ms Lutz was hit in the head by the water tank from the bath as it was ripped from the floor and her house ended up stripped to its foundations.

She told WFIE-TV she desperately searched for her grandchildren amid the wreckage of last Friday’s tornado.

“All I could say was, ‘Lord please bring my babies back safely. Please, I beg thee,” she said.

Luckily, with the help of sheriff’s officials the bath was found upturned in her garden with the boys underneath and still dry from the rain.

They drove Ms Lutz to the end of her driveway where she was reunited with the boys.

Dallas had a large bump on his head and was taken to hospital with some bleeding but it stopped by the time they arrived.

At least 90 people died across several states last week – the vast majority in Kentucky – after dozens of tornadoes barrelled through the central US.
